Adventure in Mexico City

Bienvenida a Mexico City

The next 7 days of my life will be spent in this wonderful city of North/Central America. I went to Mexico City first time in 2015 for a weekend gateway, but somehow it didn’t leave me with any significant impression at all, and I have no desire to explore more. But 2022 is a different story, my partner stole me for a week’s trip to Mexico City. I will call my trip in 2022 my “first time” to Mexico City.

Mexico is Linda, Mexico es Grande…. we heard that through songs about Mexico a couple of times, well… I am hoping it is just like the song (skeptically).

We arrived Saturday at 3:00 pm (Central Time) at the end of May 2022  and were hungry, so after we settled in the beautiful Casa Borda (French mansion in Downtown Mexico City) we took an Uber to go to Contramar (La Norte Roma neighborhood) in search of good seafood. And let me tell you, all the food there was delicious. Very tasty; the combination of fresh ingredients (seafood, herbs, lime juice, and excellent recipe). I can’t help but savor every bite of these delicious foods. My belly was content and full of energy to walk the neighborhood. We enjoyed the walk back to Downtown Mexico, It was quite our longest walk record together I believe.

The next day we planned for a food tour in La Norte Roma, it is a walking tour with a guide to learn about the neighborhood. Roma was once a wealthy neighborhood hence the beautiful architectural buildings in the area. After the major earthquake in the city, most of the wealthy move to the Polanco district and abandoned Roma. Fast forward, due to the beautiful past architecture, attracted many artists to move into the area. Nowadays, the neighborhood is full of art installments, galleries, local boutique shops, and residentials. I fell in love instantly with this neighborhood; a couple of worthy restaurants/bars to visit while in the area; 1. Panaderia Rosetta, 2. Liman Tour, 3. Galanga Thai Restaurant, 4. Rosetta Restaurant (Italian Restaurant), 5. La Pitahaya (Vegan Taqueria), 6. MUX (Contemporary Mexican) 7. Tres Galleones (Taqueria), 8. Contramar, 9. Cafe Madre. See the pictures and please refers to the website for more details.

Monday morning arrived, and we planned for an architecture tour at the historical downtown (absolutely recommended), I am so looking forward to this experience. City of many palaces, Mexico Nickname, 2nd city with the most museum in the world after London. So many styles of architecture, from the Spanish influence, Italian- Reinassance, French, German, Noevau Art, and many more, I might forget some of the detailed styles.

We started the tour at Mexico History Museum at Pina Suarez street, on our way to the location we passed Presidential Palaces (constitutional), the Metropolitan Cathedral, and its side chapel. The walking tour explored many more palaces in the downtown area; Palace de Iturbide, Palace Del Hiero, Postal Palace, Bellas Arte, Minerva Palaces (Palace of Engineering), and Latin Americano Tower. One interesting site is Templo Mayor (Pre- Hispanic small size pyramid), to add more picture to this, many colonial period palaces were built over the ruin of Aztec’s main site area, hence the Templo Mayor is located strategically in the downtown area. Palaces are everywhere you look around, either the building becoming a local shopping/ retail area, restaurants, residentials, or even hotels. Before I forgot, the city also has a palace for a bakery, try to visit Panaderia Ideal at the downtown location you will enjoy the experience.

Mexico city is full of mixed different epochs/time periods; pre-Hispanic, colonization era, and post-Hispanic era, and we can see all the obvious traces started from the architecture, arts, culture, and also the people themselves. I am fascinated and getting more curious now about the country.

To me, the city is so lovely in its masculinity and glory. Our 7 days went by fast in my encounter with Mexico City. Exploring the downtown area and its neighborhood is delightful, but to add more to the experience we visited Teotihuacan (or called – City of the Gods) to see the pyramids using the Hot Air Baloon. Now, that is a stylish way to enjoy the pyramid of the Sun, the Moon, and the boulevard of the deaths. It is very interesting to experience, something magical in this land of the Aztecs.

Other places that are worth the visit is; the Museum of Anthropology, Chapultepec Castle (literally means grasshopper), and Bazar Sabado in San Angel (South of the city). I am sure there are a lot more interesting neighborhoods, historical sites, palaces, and restaurants to explore.

We ended the adventure for now and promise to return soon. I will share more as I explore the city and the country. Viva Mexico!

With love,

Bombon
