While attending the SMITH Defensive driving course (SMART Driving), key #4 – Leave yourself an out, stuck in my mind. As I think more about it, actually this is quite a practical suggestion in life.
So SMITH Driving Keys for Safe Driving are:
- Aim High
- Get The Big Picture
- Keep Your Eyes Moving
- Leave Yourself an Out
- Make Sure They See You
The fourth principle of the Smith System – to leave yourself a way out; means ensure that other drivers do not box you in while selecting their lanes. Do not follow other vehicles too closely, and always anticipate what choices other drivers make.
If you think about it, more often in life we get stuck (boxed), and sometimes it is difficult to un-stuck our situation/position. We follow others and get too close and we failed to anticipate the coming move of others/circumstances, hence now we get stuck.
You failed (stuck/boxed), try to get unstuck and you learn (Fail-Stand up- Learn) all are part of life. Perceptiveness and ability to anticipate are based on our past learning experience, fundamental knowledge, and key information. The more we experienced those 3 things the more we will be able to handle different situations and leave ourselves an out. I am not saying to not take the risk in life, but being SMART about it will save us heartaches and unwanted circumstances.
Life is a secret, it never ceases to amaze me, and every day I am learning.
Stay blessed
